A basophil is a circulating white blood cell that belongs to a group of white blood cells called granulocytes. Granulocytes contain granules within their cytoplasm; in the case of basophils, their granules contain histamine. Histamine is the chemical released during allergic reactions so basophils are also involved during allergic reactions.
