Genes and Alleles
by: Marcia

The concept of gene from the basic concepts review says that gene is a piece of DNA, normally located in a specific locus of a chromosome, that is supposed to command the production of a protein.

An allele of a gene is one of the different forms of the same gene. For example, in diploid individuals, one receives an allele of a gene from his/her father and the other allele of the same gene (piece of DNA of the same chromosomal locus and supposed to be related to the production of the same protein) from his/her mother. (Of course, entire chromosomes are transfered from parents to the offspring, and not just single alleles alone).
