1. Exoskeleton
- the chitin prevents desiccation/water loss
- moulting allows the arthropod to grow larger (hence producing a new, larger exoskeleton)
- protects the soft tissue inside and supports the muscles

2. Diversification of segmentation
- A large diversity/variation of body segmentation, ranging from Chelicerates (spiders, scorpions) with only two main body parts, whilst Insecta (cockroaches, ants etc.) have three main body parts (head, thorax, abdomen)

3. Diversification of appendages
- A large variety of appendages differs from arthropod to arthropod, enabling different purposes/uses such as feeding, grasp prey, walking, jumping. Therefore there is a large variation of ecological niches taken up by arthropods.

4. Advanced sensory system
- Compound eyes: able to detect light, UV and colour. This allows them to sense things such as flower colour.
- Antennae: perceptive to signals such as pheromones for mating
