After glycolysis (the initial stage of the break down of glucose molecules)occurs and the amount of oxygen available is little or absent, the cell performs anaerobic respiration. Anaerobic respiration occurs in the cytosol, and produces no ATP molecules. In most plants, bacteria and yeast the type of anaerobic respiration that occurs is called fementation, it produces carbon dioxide and ethanol (alcohol). In animals lactic acid is produced, like when you experience cramps or stiches when exercising.
