What important role does protista play in the environment and what are the differences between protists and algae?

I know that protists are part of the nitrogen process in marine life but I need to know what other roles they have in the environment. I know protists and algea are alike but I need the differences between the two. I am writing a research paper and I would like to add more than what I have.
